Brits v Brita: Recycling Water Filters

Giving up bottled water is all the rage these days, but what if your "better option" involves filling landfills with once-used, toxin-containing plastic filters? If we're choosing one type of plastic over another, we should at least be able to recycle these filters. Please sign this petition if you agree, and don't let England pull ahead again (they already have better music, so let's take back the filter). Question: Use Brita water filters or know someone who does? Ever wondered what happens to all those used plastic filter cartridges?

Answer: In North America, every plastic cartridge is landfilled or incinerated, adding to the toxic waste that's choking our planet. But in Europe, you simply return the filter at a convenient drop-box and Brita recycles it!

Solution: Beth Terry and determined bloggers from across the country have launched "Take Back The Filter" http://www.takeback thefilter. org to urge Clorox (who owns Brita in North America) to redesign their filters and create a recycling program! The campaign is endorsed by Californians Against Waste, and other environmental organizations are joining the effort.
