Finally got a chance to check out Tom Waits' hilarious press conference today. That man is a hoot! I find it ironic that although he lives about 50 miles away, I can never see the bastard as he won't PLAY anywhere near here. I swear, I am going to follow through with our squatting-on-Tom's-doorstep idea until he finally caves in and gives an impromptu lawn performance for only us, with roosters and rusting hubcaps and free-flowing bourbon.
On another note, I am chcking out the new Alex Gibney film on HST (Gonzo) in SF tonight. I am psyched and have been riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave after reading Steadman's most excellent "The Joke's Over" and repurchasing my stolen copy of Curse of Lono. And Ye Gods! dare I say as I gave notice on Monday and am embarking on yet another phase of life, this time involving going to back to CCI and working from home for 6 months, in his own weird way, Thompson has become sort of role model. Not that I'll be taking the 94 Saturn along craggy Hwy 1 on a moonless night and redlining the poor bastard sans headlights attempting not to spill my gimlet--no, that's not what it's about. Too derivative.
There was only one Good Doctor and he's gone and imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery in this case. But Ho! the man knew how to live and wring the goddamn life out of everything. And that, my friend, is quite noble...and more and more appealing in an atavistic way.
